Llantwit Major started their campaign in League Division 1 with a tough away game at Haverfordwest whom before a ball has been kicked are tipped to be promoted to the Welsh Premier League at the end of the season. With key losses to last years squad and early season injuries Karl Lewis, the Llantwit manager, had to reorganise his starting line up from last year’s title winning team.
In torrential rain and the wind in their faces, Llantwit started brightly and could have well been ahead after only 2 minutes played when Josh Jones cut into the area and fired a low shot past the Haverfordwest keeper, but his shot was deflected away for a corner as the Haverfordwest defenders scrambled back.
Just a few minutes later after early Llantwit pressure the Haverfordwest left winger surged down the left and squared the ball across for the oncoming striker to make no mistake from eight yards out. Llantwit were a bit shell shocked by this early setback, after only 6 minutes on the clock, and tried to make amends. Haverfordwest continued to seek another goal and Jack Lansdown the Llantwit keeper was called upon to make a fine save after 30 minutes played when he had to block a low left shot with his legs that resulted in a corner.
Just before the break – came the decisive second goal for Haverfordwest when a Haverfordwest player crossed from the right and their striker showed great composure to trap the ball, turn, and place a shot high into the net. So Llantwit went into the changing rooms 2-0 down and with a mountain to climb in the second half if they were to get anything out of the game.
To Llantwit’s credit, however they came out with intent after the break as the rain worsened further, and Josh Jones whose pace was causing problems for the Haverfordwest defenders was through on goal and appeared to be clipped by the defender before preparing to shoot but Llantwit’s strong penalty appeal was turned down by the referee which was beginning to become a theme of inconsistent decisions. A few minutes later Josh was put through again on goal by a lovely pass from Anthony Rawlings, but he was denied by the onrushing Haverfordwest keeper as his control let him down in the area.
Llantwit continued to apply the pressure seeking a goal that could have changed the game and it then took a smart save from the Haverfordwest keeper to deny Anthony Rawlings as he volleyed a Mark Evans’ cross on target and from a corner shortly after Sean Williams just failed to meet the cross with the goal at his mercy.
Karl Lewis then began to ring the changes in the final quarter, as Haverfordwest re-assumed control and they should have made the game safe when a cross into the Llantwit area was missed by the defenders and landed at the feet of the Haverfordwest striker who then placed his shot against the foot of the post and the rebound was cleared away.
The final score was therefore 2-0 to Haverfordwest and Llantwit will be disappointed and frustrated with this game as they had a number of chances, but at this level you must be able to convert them as Haverfordwest showed them in the first half.
Hopefully, Llantwit will now be able to make amends on Saturday 18th August when they meet local rivals Penybont at Windmill Lane k.o. 2.30 pm; which will no doubt be a cracker of a game for both sets of supporters and I know the home supporters have been waiting a long time for this game to happen.

Saturday 18th August 2018 - Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division 1
Llantwit Major welcomed their local rivals Penybont to Windmill Lane for their first home game of the season in Welsh League League Division 1. Karl Lewis, the Llantwit manager, made four changes to the starting lineup following last week’s defeat at Haverfordwest.
In windy and overcast conditions, Llantwit as usual started brightly in front of a large crowd, but it was Penybont who had an early chance to open the scoring after 7 minutes play when their player manager Rhys Griffiths headed wide off the goals. A few minutes later Llantwit had an appeal for a penalty when Josh Jones burst through into the goal area and as he was just about to cross appeared to be pushed over by the Penybont defender, but the referee waived away the penalty appeal. Llantwit had a golden opportunity 10 minutes later to score when Josh Jones who was creating problems for the Penybont defenders whipped a cross over from the right-hand side which was met by Ben Cripps but unfortunately for Ben his volley was just wide of the right-hand post. Llantwit continued to apply the pressure and further efforts in the first half from Sean Williams, Ben Cripps and Darren Robinson were wide of the goals. As per any derby game neither team were able to settle into any rhythm as the game was continually disrupted by free kicks. On the rare occasions that Penybont did manage to create any chances the Llantwit goalkeeper Jack Lansdown and his fellow defenders were able to deal with quite comfortably and the first half ended 0-0.
The second half began similar to the first with Llantwit applying early pressure, however within 5 minutes of the restart tempers boiled over and an off the ball clash between Llantwit’s Lee Jones & Penybont’s Luke Borelli saw both players being sent off by the referee. Llantwit continued to create chances and in the 74th minute Ben Cripps had another chance to open the scoring when from a cross from the left-hand side by Anthony Rawlings to the near post Ben headed over from a few yards out.
Further disaster was to strike for Llantwit in the 82nd minute when Llantwit’s Josh Jones who throughout the game was causing problems for Penybont with his pace was sent off for a second yellow card. Llantwit were now down to 9 men and even worse was to follow in the 84th minute when the Penybont striker was fouled in the Llantwit penalty area and Penybont were awarded a penalty. Up stepped the Penybont striker Marcus Griffiths but fortunately for Llantwit he blasted the ball over the crossbar. With only a few minutes remaining Penybont were also reduced to 9 men when their player manager Rhys Griffiths received a second yellow card. No further chances fell to either side and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Llantwit will be pleased with this draw against promotion favourites Penybont as the players put in a much better display following their defeat at Haverfordwest. However, they will be again frustrated with this game as they had a few chances but failed to convert them.
Next game for Llantwit will be home to Cambrian & Clydach Vale on Saturday 18th August at Windmill Lane k.o. 2.30 pm. Please come along and support the Major.

Cambrian & Clydach
Saturday 25th August 2018 - Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division 1
Llantwit Major welcomed Cambrian & Clydach Vale to Windmill Lane for their second home game of the season in Welsh League Division 1. Karl Lewis, the Llantwit manager, had to make changes to his starting lineup due to suspensions and injuries following last week’s draw against Penybont.
In windy but dry conditions, Llantwit as usual started brightly, but it was Cambrian who created an early chance to open the scoring after 6 minutes play when from a counter attack that started from a Llantwit throw in deep inside their own half the Cambrian’s striker’s shot was deflected just past the far post for a corner. Llantwit responded 4 minutes later when Glyn Davies broke into the edge of the penalty area and his cross inside the 6-yard area landed at the feet of Anthony Rawlings and with his back to goal he was unlucky when his back heel shot was deflected for a corner. Llantwit kept up the pressure and in the 23rd minute they were again unlucky not to open the scoring when a cross into the near post by Anthony Rawlings was met by Rob Jones and his header brought out a fine save from the Cambrian keeper. Llantwit kept up the pressure and on the half hour mark Sean Williams had an opportunity when he met a cross into the goal area, but he could not keep his header down and it went over the cross bar. However, 6 minutes later Llantwit should have taken the lead when a cross into the area by Jonathan Fletcher caused some confusion to the Cambrian defenders and landed at the feet of Rob Jones who was unmarked in front of an empty goal but from 4 yards out his shot somehow went over the crossbar for the score to remain 0-0 at half time.
The second half began similar to the first with Llantwit applying early pressure, and Cambrian trying to hit Llantwit on the counter attack. It was Cambrian who nearly took the lead in the 60th minute when Jack Lansdown in the Llantwit goal had to make a very fine save to block the Cambrian’s strikers shot from close range and went for a corner. Both sides continued to try and seek that all important goal as the way the game was panning out one score would win the game with the very few chances that were being created. Karl Lewis the Llantwit manager tried to change things by introducing fresh legs with 3 substitutions to try and get that all important goal and right at the end Llantwit nearly managed to score when a shot from just outside the area by Jamie Miller went just wide of the far post.
Llantwit will be pleased with another draw against Cambrian who are a top side in this division having finished 4th in last season’s table. However, they will again be frustrated with this game as they had a few chances to score but once again failed to convert them and have now gone three league games without scoring.
Next game for Llantwit will be home to Undy Athletic on Saturday 1st September at Windmill Lane k.o. 2.30 pm. Please come along and support the Major.
