    Llantwit Major 2-3 Afan Lido

Llantwit Major welcomed Afan Lido to Windmill Lane who were currently lying in 3rd position in Welsh League Division 1 and were hoping to carry on from their fine win away to Port Talbot Town the previous Saturday.

On a sunny but very windy day Llantwit playing against the wind in the first half could not adapt to the playing conditions and it was their opponents who were dominant in the opening exchanges with Afan creating numerous chances and one shot hitting the Llantwit Major crossbar in the first few minutes of the game. Llantwit could not just put their game together in the final third of the field and the first half was a very drab affair and remained scoreless at the half time interval.

The second half began with a bang with Llantwit taking the lead within 30 seconds of the restart when a fine run down the touchline by right back Jamie Miller then saw him pass the ball into the goal area which was then helped on to striker Ben Cripps who with his left foot volleyed home to score from around 15 yards out.

You would have thought that this goal immediately after the restart would have spurred Llantwit on, but it was Afan Lido who responded and 20 minutes later they equalised when some confusion in the goal area between goalkeeper Jack Lansdown and defender Darren Robinson resulted in the Afan Lido striker being fouled and a soft penalty being awarded which was converted by their centre forward Mark Jones. It was only a matter of minutes later when Afan Lido took the lead when their centre forward Mark Jones latched on to a through ball and outpaced the Llantwit defenders to score his second goal. Llantwit were shell shocked and tried to get back into the game but 5 minutes later Afan Lido increased their lead when from a Llantwit Major corner they broke away and again outpaced the Llantwit defence and although their first shot was pushed away by Jack Lansdown in the Llantwit goal the rebound fell to Afan Lido’s Chris Hartland who made no mistake to score Afan Lido’s third goal.

Llantwit tried to get something out of the game and in the 89th minute centre half Sean Williams unleashed a shot from around 35 yards out that flew into the net to reduce the deficit to one goal. Llantwit threw everything at Afan Lido in the final few minutes of the game and they were unlucky when a cross from out wide on the touchline by left back Glyn Davies was only just tipped over the cross bar by the Afan Lido goalkeeper and well into injury time Llantwit had a shot cleared off the line before the referee blew his whistle for full time.

This was a very disappointing result and performance by Llantwit on the day especially after their workmanlike display at Port Talbot the previous week which resulted in a fine win.
