Saturday 1st September 2018 - Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division 1
Llantwit Major welcomed Undy Athletic to Windmill Lane for their 100th Welsh League home game following promotion to the Welsh League back in the 2012-2013 season. Karl Lewis, the Llantwit manager, again had to make changes to his starting lineup due to suspensions and injuries following last week’s draw against Cambrian & Clydach Vale.
In very pleasant playing conditions, Llantwit were unusually on the back foot from the start as Undy Athletic applied all the pressure in the opening 25 minutes with Undy having a number of corners and numerous shots at the Llantwit goal and from all this pressure Jack Lansdown the Llantwit goalkeeper was called upon to make a fine save in the 25th minute when he managed to palm a header from the Undy striker around the post for a corner.
It was not until the 36th minute that Llantwit had their first opportunity to score when from their first corner the cross into the Undy goal area caused confusion and in the resultant scramble a shot from Ben Cripps was cleared off the goal line. Undy immediately responded and Jack Lansdown then had to deal with a shot from 25 yards out by pushing the ball away for a defender to clear. There were no further chances created and half time arrived with the score 0-0.
The second half began with Llantwit making the better start and 3 minutes into the half Mike Hartley found himself unmarked from 20 yards out, but his left footed shot was wide of the goals. Llantwit had a golden opportunity to take the lead 7 minutes later when a pass from Anthony Rawlings split the Undy defenders and Josh Jones found himself through on goal but was unable to beat the goalkeeper who pushed his shot away for a corner. In the 57th minute however disaster struck for Llantwit when from an Undy free kick from 35 yards out on the touchline the cross was met by their centre half Rhys Aherne to head home to score.
Llantwit managed to equalise in the 68th minute when an Undy defender failed to deal with a ball that bounced up awkwardly in their penalty area and was deemed by the referee to have handled the ball and Llantwit were therefore awarded a penalty. Up stepped Anthony Rawlings to successfully convert the penalty and bring the score back to 1-1. Undy in the last 10 minutes tried to seek the winner but some stout defending by the Llantwit defenders kept them out and the game therefore ended in a draw.
This was another well gained point by Llantwit against a very good Undy side who were currently in 4th position in the League table before the start of the game; and Llantwit managed to score their first goal of the season which will now hopefully bring the players some more confidence in playing at this higher level of football.
Next game for Llantwit Major will be away to Goytre in the League Cup on Saturday 8th September.
Llantwit Major: Jack Lansdown, Jamie Miller (Nathan Renfree 79), Darren Robinson (capt), Glyn Davies, Kyran Gardner, Jonathan Fletcher, Jonathan Butler, Mike Hartley, Ben Cripps (Josh Jones 36), Robert Jones (Luke Cox 57), Anthony Rawlings.

Saturday 8th September 2018 - Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Cup Round 2
Llantwit Major travelled to fellow Division 1 side Goytre for the 2nd Round of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup. Karl Lewis the Llantwit manager, again rung the changes to his starting lineup due to suspensions and players unavailability following last week’s draw against Undy Athletic.
With an excellent playing service and overcast playing conditions, Llantwit made a very bright start and could have scored after only a minute played when some fine inter passing down the left from Kyran Gardner & Luke Cox led to a cross into the far post where Josh Jones was unlucky not to score when his shot was pushed away for a corner by the Goytre keeper Joseph Massero who is on loan at Goytre from Barry Town. It was all Llantwit in the opening 10 minutes as their attacking play was causing problems for the Goytre defenders and it was not until the 13th minute from a rare Goytre attack that Jack Lansdown in the Llantwit goal had to save down low to his right from a shot from the Goytre striker from 6 yards out.
In the 23rd minute Josh Jones who was causing problems to the Goytre defenders with his pace broke into the Goytre area and his shot was cleared off the line and ended up at the feet of Luke Cox but from 15 yards out his shot went over the cross bar. Again 4 minutes later another attack from Llantwit created confusion in the Goytre goal area which led to a corner. From the resulting corner the Goytre keeper then had to make a fine save from a header by Dale Stephenson by pushing his header around the post for another corner to Llantwit. Then 4 minutes later the Goytre keeper had to make another fine save to deny Luke Cox a goal when from 30 yards out a fine strike by Luke saw the keeper push his shot around the post for yet another corner. Just before half time another fine run into the Goytre goal area by Josh Jones saw him drill a pass right across the 6 yard box but Dale Stephenson was just unable to meet the pass and another chance was just missed. Half time arrived with the score 0-0 and Llantwit who were playing their best football of the season to date must have been wondering how they had not managed to score with all the chances they had created in the first 45 minutes.
The second half began with Llantwit again taking the game to their opponents and from a corner 3 minutes into the half were unlucky not to score when a misjudged back header from a Goytre defender was cleared off his own goal line by a fellow defender. Llantwit were then nearly caught out when from a rare Goytre attack when their striker Lewis Sommers was left unmarked in the 6 yard area but luckily for Llantwit his header went over the cross bar. Llantwit were still creating chances and from a fine run into the Goytre goal area by Luke Cox saw his cross then met by Jonathan Butler at the far post but his shot across the face of the goal was again deflected for another corner. Finally, in the 68th minute Llantwit managed to convert one of the many chances they had created when a pass over the top of the Goytre defenders by Nathan Jones was met by Luke Cox just outside the Goytre goal area and after rounding the keeper his shot from wide out went into the far corner of the goals to give Llantwit a well deserved lead.
Llantwit kept up the pressure as they knew a second goal would seal the game and again the Goytre keeper pulled off another fine save from Kristian Smith in the 75th minute when he pushed away a shot from just outside the goal area for another corner to Llantwit. Goytre tried to respond and in the 82nd minute from a Goytre corner their defender headed over from 10 yards out. In the 87th minute a free kick taken by Kyran Gardner from just outside the Goytre goal area saw the Goytre keeper make yet another fine save his 5th of the game when he again deflected the ball away for a corner. Llantwit had a scare in the 88th minute when Goytre who were trying to equalise in the dying minutes saw a free kick into their goal area being met by the Goytre striker but again his header went over the cross bar. The game ended with Llantwit thoroughly deserving their first win of the season having played some very good football against their fellow Division 1 opponents.
Llantwit now return to Division 1 League action when their next game will be home to Port Talbot Town at Windmill Lane on Saturday 15th September with a 2.30 pm kick off. Please come along and support the Major.

Port Talbot Town
Saturday 15th September 2018 - Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division 1
Llantwit Major welcomed Port Talbot Town to Windmill Lane for this Welsh League Division 1 game. Karl Lewis the Llantwit manager, again made changes to his starting lineup due to players unavailability and injuries following last week’s win against Goytre in the League Cup and selected Kristian Evans at centre half who had earlier in the week transferred to the Major from Garw.
Neither side in the first 25 minutes could create any clear cut chances to score and both sides were evenly matched. However, a few minutes later Llantwit found themselves a goal down when a fine left footed in swinging corner caused Jack Lansdown in the Llantwit goal problems and he could only palm the ball away to an unmarked Port Talbot Town player who from a few yards out gratefully accepted the opportunity to slot the ball home to score.
Llantwit immediately tried to respond and were unlucky not to score in the 33rd minute when Luke Cox’s volley from some 15 yards out was tipped over the bar by the Port Talbot Town keeper. A few minutes later further efforts from Dale Stephenson and Anthony Rawlings saw the Port Talbot Town keeper having to make another two fine saves to keep them ahead at the interval.
The second half started with Llantwit immediately taking the game to their opponents and from their very first attack which resulted in a corner they managed to equalise. A fine cross by Glyn Davies into the Port Talbot Town 6 yard area caused confusion to the Port Talbot Town defenders which led to their centre half who was under pressure heading home into his own net for a Llantwit goal.
Further pressure from Llantwit saw them take the lead some 5 minutes later when from another corner taken by Glyn Davies saw centre half Sean Williams head the ball home from 6 yards out to score Llantwit’s second goal. Port Talbot Town did not really trouble Llantwit after they conceded the lead and later only some fine saves made by their keeper from a shot by Josh Jones and another header from Sean Williams prevented further goals.
The game ended with the final score 2-1 to Llantwit which continues their fine run and brought them a well deserved first win in the League following three consecutive draws.
Llantwit’s next League game will again be at home to Cwmbran Celtic at Windmill Lane on Saturday 22nd September with a 2.30 pm kick off. Please come along and support the Major.

Saturday 22nd September 2018 - Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Cup Round 2
Llantwit Major welcomed third placed Cwmbran Celtic to Windmill Lane for this Welsh League Division 1 game. Karl Lewis the Llantwit manager, again had to make changes to his starting lineup due to players unavailability and injuries following last week’s League win against Port Talbot Town.
Llantwit unusually did not make a very good start to the game which was played in very difficult playing conditions with persistent rain and wind throughout the game. After only 7 minutes played they found themselves a goal down when following a corner which they initially cleared they failed to deal with the subsequent cross back into the goal area which landed at the feet of the unmarked Cwmbran Celtic left winger who from 12 yards out Jack Lansdown in the Llantwit goal was unable to save his shot to give Cwmbran Celtic an early lead.
Llantwit tried to respond but they were finding it difficult to break down their opponents who were very well organised and seemed to have adapted better to the playing conditions than Llantwit. It was not until the 32nd minute that Llantwit created their first opportunity to score when a cross into their opponent’s goal area saw Jonathan Butler running in to meet the cross but his header went well over the cross bar. Just before half time Llantwit pressure from a throw in to the Cwmbran Celtic goal area caused some confusion which led to Anthony Rawlings having his shot from 8 yards out being pushed away by the Cwmbran Celtic goalkeeper and then cleared by a defender for another throw in. From the subsequent throw in again into their opponent’s goal area Sean Williams’s header brought out a fine save by their young goalkeeper as he got down low to save the ball on the goal line and many Llantwit players appealed for a goal as they thought the ball had crossed the goal line. This was the last action before half time and as in their previous game Llantwit found themselves a goal down at the break.
Llantwit started the second half a little better than the first half with the wind behind them but they were finding it difficult to break down the Cwmbran Celtic defence. To try and change matters Karl Lewis made two substitutions in the 58th minute to try and get that all important equaliser. The substitutions had an immediate effect when Rob Jones who had just come on to the field put a lovely pass through to Anthony Rawlings just outside the goal area and as Anthony drove in on goal his shot at the near post was pushed away for a corner by the Cwmbran Celtic keeper.
Although their young goalkeeper was looking slightly unsteady at times he brought off another fine save 5 minutes later from a volley by Sean Williams which he managed to again push the ball away for a corner. As time was running out it looked like it was not to be Llantwit’s day as the Cwmbran Celtic defenders managed to clear the ball off their goaline on two occasions from headers by Sean Williams and a corner kick from Rob Jones only just failed to go in directly as his cross hit the near post.
As the final whistle went the Cwmbran Celtic players looked relieved to have secured the 3 points but all credit to them as they only had one chance throughout the game which they gratefully accepted and then they defended bravely for the next 83 minutes to deny Llantwit a point at least. Llantwit will be very disappointed with this result as they dominated the game especially the second half but again as in previous games they cannot convert the many chances that they are creating in front of goal.
Llantwit’s next League game will be away to Cwmamman United on Saturday 29th September with a 2.30 pm kick off.
Llantwit Major: Jack Lansdown, Jamie Miller (Nathan Renfree 58) Sean Williams, Kristian Evans, Glyn Davies, Jonathan Fletcher, Kristian Smith (Mike Hartley 75), Jonathan Butler, Luke Cox, Ben Cripps (Rob Jones 58), Anthony Rawlings;

Saturday 29th September 2018 - Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division 1
Llantwit Major travelled west to Cwmamman United who were just one point ahead of them in the League table and lying in 6th place. Karl Lewis the Llantwit manager, again had to make changes to his starting lineup due to players unavailability but he made a few positional changes following last week’s disappointing result at home against Cwmbran Celtic.
Llantwit made a bright start but they were nearly caught out in the 9th minute when the Cwmamman United striker broke through on the edge of the Llantwit goal area and it was only a last ditch tackle from left back Kyran Gardner that prevented the striker from having an opportunity to score. Llantwit immediately responded a minute later when a through pass to Rob Jones saw him advance on goal and as the goalkeeper approached him on the edge of the goal area he was unfortunate to see his lob shot over the goalkeeper hit the crossbar. Only a matter of minutes later Rob found himself again through on goal on the edge of the opponent’s goal area and this time his left footed shot was deflected away by the keeper for a corner. Llantwit continued to create chances to open the scoring and they got their just rewards when in the 36th minute midfielder Kristian Smith broke the offside trap and went through on goal and as the goalkeeper approached him his shot beat the Cwmamman keeper to end up in the back of the net to give Llantwit a well deserved lead. Cwmamman immediately responded and 2 minutes later Carl Roberts in the Llantwit goal had to make a fine save to push a shot away for a corner from the Cwmamman striker. In the 44th minute Cwmamman were reduced to 10 men when they had a player sent off for a bad tackle on Luke Cox. Half time arrived with Llantwit finding themselves a goal up at the interval and with the prospect of playing against 10 men in the second half.
Llantwit immediately started the second half on the attack and Rob Jones was again unlucky in the 56th minute when from a cross out wide from Anthony Rawlings into the Cwmamman goal area he brought the ball down and turned to see his shot just go wide of the goals. A minute later defender Sean Williams found himself unmarked on the edge of the Cwmamman goal area, but his shot went well over the cross bar. Cwmamman even though playing with 10 men nearly scored themselves when a shot come cross from out wide had to be tipped over the cross bar by Carl Roberts in the Llantwit goal. Up to the 65th minute Llantwit were controlling the game quite comfortably but following two midfield substitutions by Llantwit it was Cwmamman who started to create problems for Llantwit and in the 73rd minute Sean Williams had to clear the ball off the goal line from a rebound shot after the initial shot was saved by Carl Roberts in the Llantwit goal. Cwmamman were gaining in confidence and it was no surprise when a few minutes later they not only equalised but scored another goal a minute later to totally turn the game around. So, from being 1-0 up and totally in control playing against 10 men Llantwit now found themselves 2-1 down in the 82nd minute. Llantwit tried to respond and with just a few minutes play remaining a cross into the Cwmamman goal area from Luke Cox was met by Sean Williams but no Llantwit player was able to connect with his header across the 6-yard goal area. In injury time there was further disaster for Llantwit when defender Kristian Evans was sent off for a second yellow card.
Llantwit will be bitterly disappointed with this defeat as for most of the game they were well in control but again they failed to take their chances and were also punished when a lapse in concentration saw Cwmamman United fight back with 10 men to score two goals in two minutes and win the game 2-1.
Llantwit’s next League game will be home at Windmill Lane to Taffs Well on Saturday 6th October with a 2.30 pm kick off. Please come along and support the Major.
